United Nations Ends Restrictions on Syria's Leader Before Presidential Visit
United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to a United States-backed measure removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his presidential meeting the coming week.
Sharaa was named interim leader subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that removed the previous leader in the final month of 2024, ending thirteen long years of internal conflict.
Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.
Sharaa was under global penalties while commanding the Islamist group HTS, previously associated with the terrorist network. America delisted the group from its registry of international terrorist organizations during July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of the sanctions, declaring through digital channels: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and to friendly nations for assisting of Syria and its people."
Imminent Washington Talks
President Sharaa's presidential meeting on Monday follows US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.
The two leaders convened initially during May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through Arab nations.
Subsequent to that discussion, the US president described Sharaa as a "tough guy" with a "very strong past".
The HTS organization he led was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country until he severed ties in 2016.
Earlier American Trip
The upcoming meeting is not Sharaa's first trip to the United States in the current year. This past fall, he became the first Syrian leader to present to the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.
In his speech, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
