Used Fishing Nets from French Coast Become Crucial Defense Against Enemy Drones in Ukraine
On the coastal quaysides of French fishing ports, piles of discarded fishing nets stand as a familiar view.
The operational period of ocean trawling nets typically ranges between 12 and 24 months, post-usage they become damaged and unusable.
Currently, this marine-grade mesh, previously employed for catching deep-sea fish from the marine bottom, is being repurposed for an unexpected target: hostile aerial vehicles.
Charitable Effort Transforms Discarded Gear
A Breton charity has transported two shipments of nets extending 280km to the conflict zone to safeguard troops and residents along the combat zone where conflict intensifies.
Russian forces use inexpensive unmanned aircraft fitted with detonation devices, directing them by distance operation for spans of up to 25km.
"During the past 24 months, the war has evolved. Previously we never considered about drones, but now it's a unmanned vehicle battle," commented a aid distribution manager.
Tactical Application of Marine Mesh
Military personnel use the nets to construct tunnels where aerial vehicle blades become ensnared. This approach has been likened to arachnids capturing insects in a net.
"Our contacts have informed us they cannot use random fishing gear. They have been sent quite a few that are of no use," the organizer continued.
"The nets we are sending are made of horse hair and used for ocean trawling to catch monkfish which are remarkably forceful and hit the nets with a strength comparable to that of a drone."
Growing Uses
At first employed by medical personnel safeguarding treatment facilities near the frontline, the nets are now being used on roads, crossings, the entrances to hospitals.
"It's remarkable that something so simple proves so effective," remarked the charity president.
"We face no deficit of trawling material in this region. It creates difficulty to know what to do with them as several companies that recycle them have closed."
Logistical Hurdles
The humanitarian group was created after community members sought help from the leaders requesting assistance with essential provisions and healthcare materials for Ukraine.
A team of helpers have delivered two vehicle loads of humanitarian assistance 2,300km to the border crossing point.
"Upon discovering that Ukraine needed nets, the coastal residents reacted rapidly," stated the humanitarian coordinator.
Drone Warfare Evolution
Russia is using real-time visual vehicles comparable to those on the consumer sector that can be piloted by remote radio control and are then armed with combat charges.
Russian pilots with instant visual data steer them to their objectives. In various locations, defense units report that nothing can move without capturing the focus of groups of "destructive" self-destruct vehicles.
Defensive Tactics
The marine mesh are stretched between poles to form protective passageways or used to protect fortifications and equipment.
Friendly aerial vehicles are also equipped with sections of mesh to release onto hostile aircraft.
In recent periods, Ukraine was dealing with more than five hundred unmanned aircraft per day.
International Support
Hundreds of tonnes of discarded marine material have also been donated by fishermen in Scandinavian nations.
A former fisheries committee president stated that coastal workers are particularly willing to support the defense cause.
"They feel honored to know their used material is going to contribute to safety," he stated publicly.
Financial Limitations
The association currently lacks the financial resources to send more supplies this year and discussions were underway for Ukraine to dispatch vehicles to retrieve the gear.
"We will help acquire the material and package them but we lack the monetary resources to continue organizing transport ourselves," commented the organization representative.
Practical Limitations
An armed services communicator stated that defensive netting systems were being established across the conflict area, about 75 percent of which is now stated as held and governed by opposition military.
She added that opposition vehicle controllers were increasingly finding ways to circumvent the protection.
"Protective material cannot serve as a universal remedy. They are just a single component of safeguarding from drones," she emphasized.
A former produce merchant described that the individuals he encountered were touched by the help from maritime regions.
"The reality that those in the coastal economy the other side of Europe are sending nets to help them defend themselves has caused emotional reactions to their eyes," he remarked.
